Indie vs Major Record Label – Industry News

Ok, so I had a discussion on Facebook today about Indie artist being able to make it in the music industry on their own without a label. I like to "Independent vs Major record lables"debate with people so of course I had to tell this Emcee my opinion on the topic. So here is what I think… A lot of indie artistdon’t think they need a label to back them with their music. Some of that thought pattern is true, but only if you don’t care that you are not going to make big money. It is only so much that you can do on your own. Yes you can have a nice “Big” following but “Big” isn’t going to pay your bills or you’re overhead. Now if you are spending more than you are making than you are not making it. If you still have to work a 9 to 5 and you think you are making big moves, then you really aren’t making any moves. Now this is only my opinion. I know it takes time to make it big in the industry but you can’t do it on your own.

Let me break this down… You have to come out pocket for production, studio time, production of video, money for dot com, money for iTunes or any other site to host your music, clothes for your image (Image is important), and you have to come out pocket for promotion. But wait then there is travel if you are doing shows which most of the time as an indie artist you are doing it for free just to be seen. So if you are paying for this on your own and you aren’t making big sales or not selling at all, then it don’t matter how many followers you have. They are “Followers” not “Buyers”. Ok check this out, if you are looking to open a small business, what’s the first thing you do? You go to the bank to get a loan. Once you get the loan you open your business make your money and pay the bank back. That’s all a label is but more. They basically front you money and promote for you.

Then all you really have to do is show up, make your album and perform.

Now indie labels might not front you money but they still come out pocket to do the same thing. There is just no recoup of money spent.

So you don’t have to repay. Labels have access to huge outlets for your music. It is set up that way. You can’t walk in to Wal-Mart and say, “Here sell my music!” It doesn’t work like that. They look for labels. You can be known all over but if you don’t have a label to back you, then you can only get but so far. You might even be comfortable with the money you are making but as an artist if you are dedicating yourself to your craft you are not coming out of pocket to not make anything back. If you own a company you are going to pay someone to advertise for you to help you sell your products more. An advertising company has connections that don’t exist to you. So there that’s what a label has. I’m not talking a small struggling label. I’m talking an established Indie or a Major label. I know artists are scared about being taken advantage of, well that’s the business. It will happen at one point in your career. No getting around that. But to actually think you can make big numbers on your own, I haven’t seen it done yet. Everyone talks “Followers” well if all your followers are buying your music then show me the “Numbers” not word of mouth. But I do believe to get further in your career as an artist you will eventually have to have a label back you and support you…
