Raleigh, N.C. (March. 22, 2012) — HopeLine, Inc., a Triangle-based nonprofit providing free suicide prevention and crisis intervention help through its crisis line and Teen TalkLine, along with Rival Skateboarding, will host the second annual Skate for Life event on Saturday, May19 (rain date of May 20), from 11:00 a.m. until dusk at Marsh Creek Skate Park in Raleigh. The skateboarding competition will be held in honor of James “Dylan” McNeill (6/4/92-2/1/11) and Cody Nelson Arrington (7/12/92-9/28/11), two local teenagers, best friends and skateboarders who tragically ended their own lives.

Suicide

is the third leading cause of death among teens and young adults, and it is especially a problem among the young skateboarding community,” said Courtney Worthen, executive director of HopeLine. “We hope this event will honor the lives of these two young men and raise awareness for the fact that there are always other options besides suicide and self harm.”

The first Skate for Life event was held in May 2011 as a grassroots memorial event organized by friends of the Dylan McNeill family. Dylan, a skateboarder, took his own life in February 2011. At the first Skate for Life event, Dylan’s best friend and fellow skater Cody Arrington placed second in the advanced competition. Tragically, Cody also took his own life in September 2011. This year’s event will bring together the community to celebrate life and educate teens and their families on the signs and symptoms of teen depression as well as give them resources they can turn to in times of trouble.

All proceeds from this year’s event will go to support HopeLine and the organization’s Teen TalkLine website. The funds will also launch a media campaign targeting young people to raise awareness of the community support for teens and young adults suffering from depression and to help save anyone having thoughts of suicide.

Skate for Life will feature deejays, a b-boy competition, graffiti artists, raffle prizes, food, vendors and more. Admission is free to the public. The cost of registration to skate is $10 and includes a raffle ticket and free t-shirt. Winner of the advanced competition receives $250 cash, with beginner and intermediate levels receiving skate gear. Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. the day of the event.

Some of the sponsors include many local business and skate shops. Several corporate sponsors include Rock Top Hospitality, Vitamin Water, And Vyzion Radio will also be at the event.
