Beastie Boys sued over "Girls" Song

A Northern California toy company is fighting teeth and nail for its right to parody a popular Beastie Boys Song.

The Beastie Boys Studio PortraitOakland Based GoldieBlox Toy Company filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking permission to continue using the rap song “Girls” Spoof.

Beastie Boys had the Girls song featured in their first album (Licensed to ILL) this album was released back in 1986. The song sings of the desire for girls to do the dishes, to do the laundry and to clean up my room!
However, GoldieBlox marketing video spoofing the song portrays young girls singing about building spaceships and involving themselves in software coding projects. The video has gone viral and it has garnered over 8 million hits on the popular video platform (YouTube).
The company picked up on the video spoof and incorporated it to advertise and sell the company’s GoldieBlox engineering toys aimed at bringing the science out of girls.

GoldieBlox said that it was forced to file a lawsuit last week after the Beastie Boys trio threatened to slap the company with their own legal action for copyright infringement.

What did GoldieBlox Do?
GoldieBlox created its own parody video particularly to comment on the Beastie Boys Song. The company made the parody and an initiative that will further the company’s goal of breaking down gender stereotypes by encouraging your girls to engage in activities that positively challenge their intellect more so in mostly boys dominated fields of; science, technology, engineering and math.

This the information entailed in the law suit.
On Monday, 25th November 2013, the two surviving members of the Beastie Boys trio (Adam Horovitz and Michael Diamond) in an open letter posted on their publicist’s website wall that they are not opposed to the company’s message of empowering girls. They are just opposed to using their songs in advertisements.

Through their publicist, the artists reminded GoldieBlox that their video is an advertisement that has been designed with the intent of selling a product. The later continued to state that long ago when they were producing records they made a decision and vowed that they would not permit their music or brand to be used in any product ads.
The letter continued to state, “When we tried to simply ask how and why our song Girls had been used in your Ad without our permission you sued us!”

GoldieBlox Toy Company is one of four companies that have been named as finalists in a competition held by software maker Intuit to pay millions for a Super Bowl advertisement for the company that will emerge as the winner.
However, GoldieBlox “Girls” video advertising campaign is not part of the competition.
