New Zealand Ship Splits

So, how in the world does a ship split right in half? I have heard of maybe a hole in the ship because of a big iceberg but for a ship to split in two. "Cargo Ship"That’s crazy. Debris from a New Zealand ship beached after a cargo ship split in two on Jan 8, 2012. What a way to start the year. The 36-meter (774 foot) container vessel named Rena got stranded on a reef in October, on Jan 8 it split in two in the rough seas. The debris litters the beach on New Zealand’s North Island. Officials were forced to close Waihi Beach on New Zealand’s northeast coast after some containers washed ashore. There were reports of looting. Never a dull moment, people are always looking for a reason to steal. I guess its finders keepers. The debris was removed from the beach including timber, milk powder and plastic material. Let’s hope the people got some of the powdered milk. But the worst part of the whole thing is the oil spill. As much as 3350 metric tons of oil may have leaked from the vessel since the grounding. It makes it the worst oil spill that the nation has ever experienced. Like our waters on this earth needed anymore oil spills. So far they have found three little penguins were discovered to be oiled after the accident. The ship which is owned by Costamare Shipping Co. (CMRE) was said to be carrying 2,171 containers and about 1,700 metric tons of fuel oil when it hit the reef. The ship was also carrying hazardous cargo. It included four containers of ferrosilicon, a solid substance that can be hazardous when in contact with water and can emit hydrogen. Wow, this is crazy. So let’s say good bye to all the fishes. All the water around this container of hazardous material is instant devastation. But wait the master and second officer in charge of the navigational watch have been charged under New Zealand’s Maritime Act for operating a vessel in a manner causing unnecessary danger or risk. The charges carry a maximum penalty of $10,000 in New Zealand which is only $7,800 in US currency or 12 months imprisonment. Were they drunk behind the wheel and how in the world did they get stuck for so long. They were stuck since last October before the ship broke in half. And what was the condition of the ship to making it so easy for it to split in half. Looks like someone went and to a chain saw and cut it down the middle. The ship must have been in bad condition. When I hear this story I actually laughed. But it’s not really funny. But a ship in half is what made me laugh. I couldn’t believe that the ship split. But the picture is amazing. I pray that the environment isn’t effected that much from this disaster and I hope that they get all of the debris. What effects one part of the world will eventually affect another.
