Planking
Planking, a Racist Act? I was just reading an article about how Xzibit tweeted he thought that planking was stupid and racist. Racist? Well Xzibit says because that was
the way that they made slaves lie on the boat when transferring them here to the states. Ok, I understand that, but I just think a lot of black people take the past and keep it going. To me it’s funny but I know to some it’s not. But we can’t always assume that everything that resembles something of the past is racist. Now to me it almost seems like Xzibit is a hypocrite because I can recall him using the “N” word a few times. I mean African Americans took the word n****r and flipped it to n***a and that’s accepted. But planking isn’t? Slaves being planked isn’t the first thing that came to mind when I first seen it. It was hilarious to me. People did it on cars, floors buildings, vacuums and more.
Someone is always trying to take the fun out of something. I wonder if it was a black person that did it first would Xzibit or anyone else be offended by it. I am not knocking what my ancestors have been put thru but when are we going to finally put the past to rest and stop living in it. The past cannot be changed. I am not saying that it is ok to make fun of what my ancestors went through but I think getting mad about people planking is a waste of time and energy. I bet that these people never even gave it any thought that this is what they did to the slaves and if they did who cares.
It doesn’t affect anyone’s life, well except the guy that fell off the building in Russia I think it was. Anyway, for Xzibit to do an interview about it is lame. Don’t get me wrong, I like Xzibit, but where the hell has he been? To resurface in an article talking about planking being racist is strange. I’m still shocked that people are calling planking racist. Then that means anything that people do nowadays that might relate to what happened to slaves is racist. I don’t see it. This isn’t the first time I heard people calling it racist. I guess I am sitting on the fence with this. It’s sad what my ancestors went through.
The pictures hurt my heart. But I guess I am just tired of hearing people always look for the negative in something that’s fun. What can planking possibly hurt, but the people that’s doing it. It’s not going to bring racism back. It never went anywhere anyway. But I think people like Xzibit are giving credit where credit isn’t due. Give it a break. If we as black people keep using the race card for everything, soon it’s not going to mean anything. Just let the people plank and make fools out of themselves. It’s not affecting my life. Is it affecting yours?

Me being uneducated about the conditions and treatment of the African slaves brought to America 150 to 200 years ago, I would not see any relationship between planking and racism. Now that I have been informed of the racist symbolism of planking, I promise to no longer do this except when midgets are involved! I would much rather be accused of heightism than being racist! But seriously, very well put, Ms. Luvly! I know it’s easy for a white guy to agree on this, but I was not around when the slave trade was at its peak. In my business, the majority of my customers are black and most have become close friends of mine, and would agree with you 100%. Not that I should speak for my friends but I have taken the time to get to know them and their personal veiws! Thank you very much for a great outlook on humanity!
Thank you Teddy for your very positive and funny response. I am glad that someone agrees with me
. But I do believe that people have taken the fun out of planking. I myself have been wanting to plank but I don’t think a thick black woman would look too great planking. But people need to breath and relax. Yes lets continue to study and learn out past but lets not continue to use it as an excuse for everything. But thank you very much for understanding. I hope you enjoy more of my writing. I try to stay open minded when writing on important topics.

Planking. Well the first time I heard about it was when some idiot planked on a balcony of a really tall building fell off and died. What’s the point of planking? I don’t find it hilirious at all. Especially now that some people have lost their lives because of it. No point in it. Sorry. But if some people enjoy it and think its funny then good on them. That’s just my opinion.
Hi Sia
You are right it is your opinion. I think it was said that the guy fell off the building but if done safely it can be funny. I have had friends do it and depending where they do it the funnier it is. But what’s funny to some is not funny to all. That’s acceptable. Its stupid but fun
This is what I got from Google of where Planking originated. Let me tell you, it has nothing to do with slavery in America at all whatsoever.
Its my understanding that Gary Clarkson and Christian Langdon came up with ‘The Lying down game’ when they were traveling in Europe and were tired of just having pictures of places they visited, so they asked people to take a picture for them and they would lay down, face down, with their arms at their sides and face+feet pointed downward. It was a neat way for them to document their memories with the places they traveled. Once it started picking up over the internet, the American and Australian term changed to the name ‘planking’ around 2009.
Just thought ill share the above with you.
