Is Manning the Best Player Ever

I don’t have a great memory, which means that the consensus that I recall wasn’t that long ago. That consensus was that Peyton Manning was the best player in the "Peyton Manning"league (something that I totally disagreed with because of what my wife calls a man crush on Tom Brady). It was also said that he was one of the top 3 quarterbacks of all-time. That puts him in the class of Cool Joe Montana, John Elway, and above Troy Aikman, Steve Young, Roger Starbauch, Johnny Unitas and our championship ringless greats such as Dan Marino, Warren Moon and Dan Fouts. Don’t get me wrong, I think that Peyton is a great player and has statistically set himself apart from a large part of his peers. When I say peers, I don’t mean guys in the league today, I mean past, present and future Hall Of Fame quarterbacks.  And the fact that the Indianapolis Colts are considering taking Andrew Luck out of Stanford has no effect on my feelings, I mean even the greatest of all-time eventually had to move aside for Steve Young.

But what makes me question the extent of Peyton’s greatness is how he performs when the lights are shining the brightest.  Playoff and championship games have always been how we separate the watchers from the go getters (in my Young Jezzy voice).  I mean was Steve Young a better pure passer than Warren Moon?  Was Joe Montana a better gun slinger at his position than Dan Marino?  Lastly, let’s compare the numbers between Dan Fouts and Troy Aikman.  I’ll bet my Florida State Letterman jacket that it’s not even close favoring Dan Fouts.

I guess my point is what we have been grading Manning on is actually not how we rate our greats when it’s all said and done.  Most Manning supporters bombard me with his Championship ring that he won against the Chicago Bears.  He was the MVP and the lights are always bright in the Superbowl right?  WRONG!  But when you pull the cover off of that game, you will see that the Bears turned the ball over 5 times. Their only explosive play came off of a kickoff return by the great kick return specialist Devin Hester. With the game never really being in question, is it fair to say that the lights weren’t that bright.

At this point, any Peyton Manning fan that reads this will peg me as a Manning hater, but I have proof that that is not true.  I am like every other realist that can look at a situation and judge it objectively. So here is my proof. If I have to take my team on the road in the playoffs and beat Green Bay at Lambeau Field against Brett Farve or Arron Rogers in his MVP season. Or if I have to fly across the country and face the best defense in the NFL on a wet, cold field in the NFC Championship game. Your damn right I’ll take Manning!  Unfortunately Peyton fans, I am referring to Eli Manning.  Oh he plays for the G-Men!
